What is Next-Generation Electronic Control Technology installed on New Ninja1000!? — control technologies used for closer models

Columns

Different from Supersport, big street sport like over a liter naked and sport tourer should get realistic admiration from many people. In fact, it highly grabbed attention at the INTERMOT this year.

Evolving Electronic Control

Each model put on a show of its own steady evolution.
Of course, basic parts of vehicles have continued to be improved aiming for stress-free, comfortable and safe travel as well as for smart easy handling for the large vehicle size.
Yet, the new models at this show apparently indicated how fast the electronic control has been enhanced.

In this meaning, it is Kawasaki Ninja1000 (Z1000SX) that suggests one direction for big street sport in the future.

Advanced New Ninja1000 (Z1000SX)

This new model is compatible for EURO4 and has reinforced the performance as well. Also, it has changed the air intake and exhaust system and the ECU map, bringing out 142ps, larger by 2ps.
The LED headlight has delivered sturdier look. The large windshield and fairings have reinforced wind breaking effect and the upgraded seat has improved comfort.

Then, it is the electronic control device that you should pay attention to more.

The inertial measurement unit detects the vehicle condition. The cutting edge methods manage the traction control, wheelie control, ABS, and engine brake. It is worth specific mention that the device is technically almost same as Supersport ZX-10R.

Further, the control has integrated with KCMF (Kawasaki Cornering Management Function). It aims to manage cornering by comprehensively getting control over the traction control, wheelie, cornering ABS, engine brake, and rear lift.

The IMU of Ninja1000 is, from the specification, BOSCH MM5.10 which is the same as for ZX-10R. Essentially, MM5.10 has a five-axis sensor that detects: accelerations in lateral, vertical, and longitudinal directions; and angular velocity (angular variation in time unit) in yaw and roll. Then, ECU calculates angular velocity in pitch from other data. Same as 10R, Ninja1000 detects angular velocity in roll and pitch, then calculates yaw.
Kawasaki seems to make its IMU’s installation direction its own method.

Not only Supersport, but BMW, Ducati, and KTM have also installed IMU on big adventures that change vehicle posture frequently, starting to control many things.
Ninja1000 has brought this into Street models. In order to enjoy the significant power on roads under unstable conditions, Kawasaki began using technologies developed for racing machines.

Electronic control technologies installed in production vehicles in a stream

The use of electronic control technologies is widely seen in other models.

For example, BMW K1600GT has: semi-active suspension called Dynamic ESA; Shift Assistant Pro for shifting up and down without using the clutch; Reverse Assist, which can be simply activated from the left-handlebar panel at the press of a button; and Intelligent Emergency Call as an ex works option for rapid assistance in the event of an accident or in emergency situations.
The redesigned side has even more optimized the style.

For BMW S1000R, it includes traction control and ABS for races as standard. The machine is compatible for EURO4 and produces maximum output power of 165ps, larger by 5ps. The area around the pivot of the frame has been renewed and the rigidity balance has been improved along with the weight saving.
An AKRAPOVIC titanium silencer has been installed and the vehicle weight has become 2kg lighter. The handle has been mounted through a rubber bush.

When it comes to YAMAHA MT-10, it has added the more sporty high-end model SP. Same as R1M, SP has been equipped with OHLINS electronic controlled suspensions. It has installed an automatic shifter for new models including standard models along with the existing traction control. The engine map has been enhanced, too.

Electronic control technology has become familiar to our close models.
