HONDA Popular Small Motorcycle (51-125cc) Test Ride x 5 Models (Acceleration Perfomance)

Columns

It is a small motorcycle with many advantages. We picked up 5 models (Monkey 125, CB125R, Cross Cub 110, Grom (MSX125), PCX) from Honda motorcycles that have released 13 unique models into this class, and conducted a touring test for 240km, and compared those each personality. Unlike large engine displacement motorcycle, it is the charm of a small motorcycle (51cc-125cc) to use the entire rotation range of the engine. Therefore, it is easy to become a criterion of choice for superiority or inferiority of power performance. In this article #3, we checked the acceleration performance and the highest speed in closed course.

CB125R accelerated with the top fastest in the 5 models. GROM (MSX 125) and Monkey were also great.

The figure below is a graph of acceleration when the throttle is fully opened. From the start, the CB125R drives the way to the top until it reaches its maximum speed, which is also consistent with the sensation of acceleration. It was followed by these 2 models, the air-cooled engine GROM (MSX125) and Monkey which showed easy acceleration until they pull at 3rd gear. The PCX has been generated heat of 12ps following after CB125R, and GROM (MSX(125) and Monkey preceded around 200m. Also, Cross Cub 110 has the lowest power which showed the lowered RPM acceleration in the graph.

For the hisghest ranking, it was purely power-ordered. In particular, PCX showed remarkable growth in the second half, which believed to have been achieved by the high performance of the eSP engine, as well as the good aerodynamics. Even if the Cross Cub was not high with the other 4 models, the actual measurement of more than 90km/h is impressive.

[Measured Data] Ultra-common use speed renge for daily use = 0-60 km/h seconds reached (maximum speed)
1st place: CB125R [13ps] 5.349 seconds (108.40km/h)
2nd place: GROM (MXS 125) [9.8ps] 6.234 seconds (100.75km/h)
3rd place: MONKEY 125 [9.4ps] 6.515 seconds (100.82km/h)
4th place: PCX [12ps] 6.806 seconds (105.27km/h)
5th place: CROSS CUB 110 [8.0ps] 8.712 seconds (91.58km/h)

It was the CB125R that gave the 1st place both the acceleration and the maximum speed. This model only has the power weight ratio as well as maximum power with the 5 models, in addition, this is the only model with a 6-gear mission (GROM (MSX 125), Monkey, and Cross Cub are 4-gear), and the outstanding speed is ahead. The CBR125R is followed by GROM (MSX125) and Monkey. The engine of this 2 models is basically the same, and the weight of the motorcycle is almost the same, but the difference in the output characteristics and the flatness of the tire appeared is slightly different. The speed “impression” on public roads is equal to or better than CB125R because PCX is continuously variable speed which can be able to keep the throttle open. The Cross Cub engine displacement has appeared significantly.

The acceleration feel was defferent each 5 models. It is about the point of practical use.

This 5 models, CB125R sporty water-cooled single, the eSP engine of the PCX that combines fuel economy and driving, and can be roughly classified into 3 types of GROM (MSX 125), Monkey, and Cross Cub, which adopted the horizontal cylinder of the Super Cub system.

CB125R

The CB125R is characterized by a lively blow-up that extends to just before the start of the red zone, at 14000rpm. In addition to the faithful response, it is possible to maintain a high rotational range by making full use of the 6-gears mission which can be a sporty run to match the appearance. However, there are also torque in the low-and mid-speed range so that you can drift around the city, and practical use can also be highly appreciated.

PCX

The PCX eSP engine is the biggest point behind the scooter. The small vibration transmitted to the body is not limited, and the single cylinder seems to be smooth. Still, it accelerates firmly if the throttle is opened, and it is also possible to lead the fast flow of bypass. Furthermore, it is the best engine for a scooter of this class, such as equipped with an Idling Stop.

GROM & MONKEY

The GROM (MSX 125) and Monkey were adopted a four-stage manual clutch mission. It is basically a similar engine, but due to the difference in the intake and exhaust system, the Monkey has a thicker torque at the low and medium rotation ranges. The difference is obvious when compared to the ride, with the Monkey on the street and the GROM (MSX 125) on the sporty side.

CROSS CUB

The Cross Cub was slightly delayed in starting acceleration because it had less displacement than the four models. However, the acceleration feel and response were unique to this model. If it is a taste that seems to be a single cylinder, it is the first of five cars.
